The file finding application for RISC OS computers

Brief Overview

!Finder is a multi-tasking file search utility which takes a (wild-carded) file name and/or a file type specification and optionally creation dates and file sizes, and searches a user specified directory for matches. Dummy filetypes 'App' and 'Dir' can be used to search just for applications and directories. It is also possible to specify a number of filetypes that will NOT be included in the search. Other options include recursive searches, case sensitivity and automatic directory opening.

Search box

!Finder can search any filing system which understands and responds to calls to OS_GBPB 11, which means that ADFS, SCSIFS, RAMFS and IDEFS should all work, as should image filing systems (!Finder knows about DosFS, ArcFS, SparkFS and X-File directories, other image filing systems can be added on request). However, image file directories are only searched if the appropriate image filing system is loaded and active. SparkFS archives do not work with with SparkPlug loaded, but can be searched if ArcFS is running, though for some reason, searching archives can be very slow. !Finder has not been tested with SparkFS as the author doesn't have a copy...

File Window

Files found that match the specified criteria are displayed in a window similar to the Filer in full info mode. Files may be selected in discrete groups either by select clicking, adjust clicking and rubber banded drags, just like the filer. Selected files may then be dragged into application windows and onto application icons. Double clicking files acts in a similar way to to the filer.

Files can be sorted according to their full path name or just the leaf name, the size of the file, the filetype and the date of creation.
